A club in Barrow has used its 80th anniversary celebrations to support a nationwide charity campaign.

Between September 9 and 16, the Barrow Bridge Club joined the English Bridge Union (EBU) in raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The society managed to bring in £700, which was put with donations from clubs across the country to see the EBU smash its original £60,000 target.

Clare Parker said: "Our open day was well supported by members and we had a number of visitors who have expressed an interest in learning the game and joining us.

"We celebrated the club’s 80th Anniversary in style with a wonderful meal, table magician, quiz, music and dancing at Barrow Golf Club on Thursday, September 12."

They are now running a new series of classes to encourage people to take up bridge, with those interested invited to join the club at 1A Drake Street on Wednesdays from 6.30pm.
