After months of build-up, the countdown to the opening of a new, healthy restaurant in Barrow is on.
Dumbbell Dining has revealed it has found a premises and will open its doors for the first time around the middle of October.
Following problems with the lease agreement for their first location, Dumbbell Dining will be taking over the space previously known as Ma’s Kitchen.
The new bistro, on Dalton Road, is being brought to life by fitness enthusiasts and co-owners David Poulsen and Tom Allonby who promise tasty and healthy food options.
They have been working with professional nutritionists on a way to provide fresh and healthy, macro-counted breakfast and dinner options on the go.
As both David and Tom work offshore, their chef Mandy Chubb will run the shop day to day as general manager.
David said when things fell through with the first location, they were committed to getting a food trailer when they were alerted to the sale of Ma’s Kitchen.
He said the owner of Ma’s Kitchen Donna Jefferson was pleased the property was going to another local business.
The premises was pulled from advertisement so a private sale could be arranged.
To cater to some of Ma’s regular customers, Dumbbell Dining will alter the morning menu to offer traditional breakfasts but with low-fat sausages and bacon medallions.
Unlike the first premises, David said the commercial setup of the premises means Dumbbell Dining can get up and running straight away.
They will also be teaming up with Kade Kendall, who owns the Transformation Unit 247 gym, and will be doing exclusive deals for members.
David and Kade grew up together and were friends all through school.
David said: “Having one of Barrow’s top bodybuilders on board has been a huge help because Kade has experience and knowledge of the gym community.”
Talking to different people has made the team aware of all the different wants and needs.
“We want to be an inclusive bistro and cater for everyone so we will be doing Vegan options as well as vegetarian and Halal," said David.
“I’m really looking forward to the journey, right now I’m nervous and excited. We've promised the area something unique, but it has to be right, which is why there is a whole range of emotion.”
He revealed that they are going to look at opening with an alcohol licence so the bistro can host Christmas parties and gym nights out.
There will soon be a website in place but you can keep an eye on social media teases of the menu and an official date for the grand opening.
David said: “Tom, the team and I can’t wait to welcome you all.”
