A SIGN has appeared in Bowness asking visitors not to feed the wildlife on The Glebe.

The sign, attributed to Westmorland and Furness Council, asks 'please don't feed the wildlife' and calls on visitors to 'keep wildlife wild.'

The sign says feeding is harmful because it attracts rats, there is natural food available such as insects, it can reduce water quality, it can facilitate the spread of avian diseases and 'snack food' does not provide proper nutrition for waterfowl.

It instead asks tourists to observe wildlife in its natural habitat rather than feeding it.

Dozens of Canada Geese gathering on The Glebe and the nearby promenade on the shore of Windermere has become a habitat for rats.

A spokesperson from the British Pest Control Association said that rodent infestations increase over winter as rats and mice are on the hunt for warm, dry shelter with access to a food source.
