The General Burgoyne in Great Urswick, which recently reopened under a new manager, has been awarded a five-star hygiene rating.

An inspection from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) resulted in a hygiene rating of five, which is considered ‘very good’.

After closing in March, the pub welcomed customers back with open arms and a grand reopening celebration in early August.

Inspectors visited the establishment on Wednesday August 28 and marked the pub ‘good’ across all categories - Hygienic food handling, Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and Management of food safety.

The Church Street pub has closed, reopened and changed hands several times over the last few years.

On July 10, the pub announced that it was operating under new manager Jo Ritchie.

Jo was born and raised in Great Urswick and has strong family ties to the area as two generations of her family were also brought up in the village.

The new landlady revealed that her first ever job was as a waitress at the Burgoyne when she was 15 years old.

Jo described being awarded the five-star rating as the ‘icing on the cake’.

She said: “The first month feels like a whirlwind.

“From opening the bar and welcoming locals back into the new look General Burgoyne and now being able to offer my new menu, it really is fantastic.

“The visit from the food and hygiene inspectors took me totally by surprise but I have worked hard to make sure everything is in order which has now paid off.

“I’ve hosted my first guest chef night, which sold out so quickly we ended up doing double! We were fully booked on Friday and Saturday with Knife and Sole providing an amazing burger menu.

“I’m now looking forward to the darker evenings, getting the fire lit and hopefully having some live music nights.

“Thank you to everyone for making the pub such a special place.

“I am exhausted but loving every minute.”
