A special event will offer people the chance to explore a lesser-known part of Morecambe Bay.

Morecambe Bay Partnership is hosting a two-part event in September, focusing on the sands around Chapel Island.

The charity has organised a walk on September 28, led by the King's Guide to the Leven Sands, Ray Porter.

This walk will take participants across the sands near Chapel Island in the Leven Estuary, including a visit to the recently emerged Collins Weir.

The route allows people to cross the bay on foot, following in the footsteps of the monks, travellers, and fishermen of Chapel Island.

The walk has been scheduled for later in the season to avoid disturbing the rare nesting birds that inhabit the sands and the island.

In addition to the walk, the charity will host an online talk on September 25, focusing on the heritage and nature of Chapel Island.

Sarah Mason, chief executive officer of Morecambe Bay Partnership, will discuss the island's role in protecting the bay's wildlife.

Claire Bradshaw, archaeology and heritage officer, will delve into the island’s past and its unique location in the bay.

Teresa Kirk, supporter engagement officer, said: "The charity want to create a special atmosphere so only 100 tickets are available.

"We want this to be a small and friendly walk where you can join members of the Morecambe Bay Partnership team and the King’s Guide to discover and celebrate the unique character and heritage of this part of Morecambe Bay."

All proceeds from ticket sales will support the charitable work of Morecambe Bay Partnership, including programmes that protect the bay’s nature and heritage, and improve access to the bay’s coast and countryside.
