A contractor is being sought for the Millom Ironline project.

This is part of the Millom Town Deal programme, aimed at improving the area.

The Ironline project, which has a budget of £10 million, will enhance the sea wall and coastal lagoon off the coast of Millom.

The aim is to create an inclusive route across RSPB Hodbarrow, with more than 7km of walking and cycling paths to be improved.

A new welcome centre is also part of the plan.

This will include a café/bar, retail space, and a multi-use events room, with adjacent parking for around 80 vehicles.

David Savage, the chairman of the Millom Town Deal Board, said: "We are witnessing another big step forward with the Ironline Scheme as we encourage contractors to get involved and deliver this exciting project.

"Momentum is building across all the town deal projects and we need to be mindful that each of the four projects will evolve at a different pace in line with its delivery schedule.

"Today, we are focussing on the Ironline as we start to transform plans into positive change for our community."

Contractors interested in the project can submit information through Cumberland Council’s online procurement system, The Chest, or via email or post.

The deadline for responses is October 21 at 12pm.

The Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million in November 2022, with an additional £8.7 million in match funding.

The money will be used to deliver four projects: The Ironline, Activating Community Health, Reactivating Heritage Buildings, and Connecting Millom and Haverigg.

The Ironline project aims to deliver several improvements.

This includes 300,000 square metres of improved parks, green space, and outdoor space, 150,000 square metres of rehabilitated land, and 7.5km of improved or new walking and cycling paths.

The Hodbarrow Beacon heritage building will be restored, and a new cultural facility, the welcome building, will be created.

There will be 80 new car parking spaces, six new art installations, and 120 trees planted.

The project is also expected to create eight direct jobs at the welcome building and support up to 26 jobs during the construction of the Ironline.
