Visitors have compared a small quaint town in the Lake District to a "fairy tale land" which has been named among the UK’s prettiest villages.

Where? Ambleside. Naturally.

Located at the top of Lake Windermere and built around the Stock Ghyll River, it has a population of just 2,600.

With a bustling high street and beautiful traditional slate buildings which house outdoor equipment shops, bookshops, gift shops, cafes, restaurants, and a cinema.

According to the Express, there are lots of beauty spots for visitors to see in Ambleside including Bridge House, which claims to be Britain’s smallest home and one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District, and Stock Ghyll Force, a 70ft waterfall mere minutes from town.

Multiple outlets, including House & Garden, loveEXPLORING, Hotels.com, and others, have named it among the UK's prettiest and most charming towns.

According to Rightmove, the town’s average house price for the last year is £377,273. Zoopla reports it as £416,988.

The town’s origins go back to Roman times, with a fort in nearby Waterhead, and has historic connections including William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.

There is no train station in Ambleside so the best way to get there by public transport is to get a train to Windermere and a 15-minute bus to Ambleside. Access by road is simple via the A591.
