Cumbrian 19-year-old has completed the Outward Bound's Pinnacle expedition.

Zak Abernethy, of Levens, South Lakeland, completed the journey on August 27.

Arguably their most gruelling expedition, it takes young people on a 19-day journey of self-discovery and perseverance through the wilderness.

Only fewer than 100 young people manage to complete this life-changing expedition each year.

Accompanied by 11 other determined people, Mr Abernethy embarked on this challenging adventure from Aberdovey on the North Wales coast, deep into the mountains of Eryri/Snowdonia National Park.

The Pinnacle expedition, characterised by trials and triumphs, is designed to push people out of their comfort zones and explore their limits.

During their 19-day adventure, Mr Abernethy and his group experienced the great outdoors in various forms.

They camped, kayaked, canoed, and hiked their way across North Wales.

The young adventurers braved the harsh weather, navigated treacherous valleys, and scaled some of the highest peaks in the British Isles.

On top of creating lasting memories, participants also develop vital life skills during the expedition, fostering courage, compassion, and confidence in their abilities.

The solo experience is a highlight among the many challenges, offering each participant a chance to spend time alone in nature for personal reflection and growth.

Mr Abernethy said: "I've always been able to make friends anywhere, so I felt able to quickly adapt to this environment.

"But nothing could prepare me for this, the expedition has really helped me with my self-confidence, reflection and thinking about the future.

"The pinnacle experience has cleared my mind like nothing else, and I feel like it's been really good for my personal growth."

Richard Allen, an Outward Bound Instructor, directed this year’s expedition.

He said: "Zak and his group have been exceptional from the very start and made me super proud.

"They’ve overcome epic weather conditions, enormous mountains and masses of midges whilst hiking over 19 days.

"The relationships he’s built and tenacity and determination he’s demonstrated to achieve this has been truly inspiring."

Based in Cumbria, The Outward Bound Trust facilitates these transformative experiences for 25,000 young people annually, committed to making these adventures accessible to everyone.

A significant number of summer participants benefit from substantial financial support through Outward Bound's Adventure Fund, ensuring economic challenges do not stop young people from embarking on these life-changing experiences.
