Organisers of the Ulverston Lantern Festival are anticipating a 'huge rush' for lantern kits ahead of the event.

The 'Story Time' themed event will take place on September 14.

The kits, priced at £6, are ready for pick-up at designated locations across Ulverston and volunteers are making concerted efforts to keep the stock ample.

The kits can be acquired from Appleseeds in Market Street, The Coronation Hall, Ulverston Market Hall, The Cumbria Way in Upper Brook Street, and Croftlands Launderette.

They will also be available at a stall at the Charter Market on September 7.

Festival chair Chris Nelson said: "We are already seeing big demand for kits and getting fantastic feedback from lantern-builders about the ideas that are taking shape.

"They range from Cumbria’s own Peter Rabbit stories by Beatrix Potter and Disney favourites to classic adventure stories, children’s books and of course the Harry Potter universe.

"Every TV programme, every film, every play and every book invariably tells a story so there is huge scope for people to create wonderful lanterns large and small."

To help facilitate these creative ideas, the Coronation Hall will host lantern workshops from September 8-13.

These workshops cater to all, giving beginners and seasoned lantern builders the chance to bring their concepts to life.

On the day of the festival, Ulverston Town Centre will be completely closed to traffic from 7pm to 10pm, with a strict ban on all non-emergency vehicles.

From 7pm, four processions will start at different points around the town, merging in County Square outside the Coronation Hall at about 8pm, marking the start of a 'River of Light' parade which will proceed towards Ford Park for a 'big firework finale' at 9pm.

The self-funded Ulverston Lantern Festival is grateful for the support of Broughton-based education specialists CGP Books, the Eric Wright Charitable Trust, Ulverston Town Council, and the Town Land Trust.

However, it is the sale of lantern kits and monetary contributions from spectators that make up the largest portion of the £10,000 required to host the event each year.

The festival also depends heavily on volunteers for smooth functioning.

Mr Nelson said: "If we are going to keep the Lantern festival alive for future generations we need new volunteers.

"It is just three hours on a Saturday night, but every extra person we recruit helps to ensure that the festival survives and prospers and remains a feature of Ulverston for everyone to enjoy."

Just £1 from each spectator would secure another year for the festival.

Supporters are able to donate via JustGiving.com or by scanning posters and leaflets.
