The owner of a family-run business in the Lake District has announced his retirement after nearly five decades.
Graham Tyson has been at the helm of F.W. Tyson in Ambleside for 46 years, but announced last weekend that he would be finally stepping down.
The business, located at Market Place in the south Cumbrian has been a go-to destination for tourists and locals alike seeking footwear before setting out on the fells or mountains.
Reflecting on his long career, Graham said: "It's been an incredible journey.
"I’ve had the privilege of helping so many people prepare for their time on the fells, and it’s something I’ll always cherish.
"But the time has come for me to pass the baton to the next generation, and I’m confident the shop is in the best possible hands with Katie."
F.W. Tyson has been a cornerstone of Ambleside for decades, with Graham taking over the reins from his late father, Malcolm Tyson, and serving as the fourth generation to manage the store.
The business will remain in the family, moving into its fifth generation of ownership under Graham's niece, Katie, and her husband Louis.
While they will operate more behind the scenes, they have exciting plans to modernise the business, whilst ensuring they do not take away its heritage or charm.
They aim to streamline day to day business processes, enhance marketing efforts, and launch a new e-commerce website.
Additionally, Katie plans to grow the shop's social media presence to drive awareness and sales, ensuring that F.W. Tyson continues to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Despite these changes, customers have been assured that they can expect the same warm, knowledgeable service they have come to love.
Tilly, Graham’s sister - who has been with the business for 40 years - and Mark, a recent addition to the team, are excited to continue the tradition of serving valued customers with the same passion and care that has defined F.W. Tyson since opening day.
