INTERESTING items from the English Civil War were found in Millom after an archaeological dig.

Millom and District Local History Society marked the end of its Digging for Millom project with its Finds Day at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, August 24.

The society reported that several ancient field boundaries, possibly dating back from late Prehistory to early Medieval or even Romano-British, were found during the dig.

Jan Bridget, chair of the society, said: "We learnt that the moat continues to cover a much wider area around [Millom Castle] than previously thought and that we were actually digging in the old moat.

"We also discovered, from the substantial collection of iron working waste, that both smelting and smithing was taking place here, and weaving."

The group found 145 fragments of medieval pottery, and speculated that they were related to a weekly market 'somewhere near the castle'

As well as finding a lead shot, the archaeologists also identified previously unrecognised musket ball impacts on the southern wall of Holy Trinity church.

The photographic display of the finds will be on show at Millom Heritage and Arts Centre for two weeks from Wednesday, August 28 to Tuesday, September 10.
