Rescue teams in the Lake District had a hectic Bank Holiday as they continue to field their busiest year on record.

The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association (LDSAMRA) revealed this week that, between August 23 and 26, they responded to 20 emergency calls.

These consisted of six in Patterdale, five in Wasdale, three in Keswick, two in Langdale and Ambleside, two in Cockermouth, one in Coniston, and one in Kendal.

A spokesperson from the LDSAMRA commented: "A total of 35% of these callouts could have avoidable, either through people getting lost, flashing lights, or people having to request assistance due to bad weather that was forecast.

"The other 65% of these incidents saw people requiring medical assistance, with 13 injured and one fatality due to cardiac arrest - our thoughts are with their friends and family."

The trend over the Bank Holiday continued the pattern that rescue teams have experienced across 2024.

Following the weekend, the number of emergency calls reported has risen to 551, which is an increase of 12 per cent compared to 2023 and has already made it the highest year to date.

In addition, total team deployments now stands at 639 at the time of writing, a 20.5% difference when compared to last year, again making it the busiest year for Lake District teams on record.

The LDSAMRA covers 12 teams across the region, involving over 400 volunteers.

The organisation used the Bank Holiday as a reminder to the public that all team members are unpaid despite being professionally trained.

Each team was said to require roughly £150,000 a year to keep running, with the growing demand only adding to funding requirements.
