The returning Ulverston Lantern Festival is 'urgently' in need of help to make sure that it can go ahead smoothly.

The organisers revealed on Thursday, August 15 that, due to 'national policing protocols, they currently have less support than usual when it comes to the number of stewards signed up.

With that in mind, they are now asking members of the public to volunteer their time on September 14 so that the lantern parade can remain 'afloat'.

The team commented: "Roles include walking with the parades, occasionally ushering over-enthusiastic spectators out of trampling range, or keeping lantern-bearers from bopping anyone with pokey lanterns.

"With a big team, it doesn't get too onerous for anyone and helps stoke a warm glow, knowing your efforts ensured an event enjoyed by thousands could go ahead.

"Lantern Fest is an entirely voluntary endeavour, made by the community for the community - if you can lend a couple of hours, we'll all have a cracking night."
