THE former chairman of Barrow AFC, called the 'saviour' of the club, has died.

The Bluebirds announced the death of its life president Brian Keen, 81, on Tuesday (August 13) and club supporters have rallied to share their condolences.

Mr Keen spearheaded the consortium of local businessmen which saved the club from extinction back in 1999.

After playing a major role in saving the club, as chairman he oversaw major on-field success including Barrow’s promotion into non-league’s top flight in 2008 and their 2010 FA Trophy triumph.

He was then given the role of life president at the club.

Paul Hornby, the current Barrow AFC chairman, said Mr Keen offered him support and advice when he first joined the club.

He said: "When we took over it was quite a dark time and he came over and he offered his help straight away. He will go down as a legend in terms of the history of The Bluebirds.

"He always had a friendly word. He was never too busy to have a chat with you.

"He was just a lovely guy. Everyone will remember him for the fact that he literally saved the football club - I don't think we would have a football club today if it wasn't for Brian."

Frazer Stewart, the Bluebirds Trust director on the club board, said: "I don't think it's an exaggeration to say without Brian Keen we wouldn't have a Barrow AFC today.

"He was a true gentleman, always humble and exuded passion for the club and the town. The reaction shows how closely he was held in the hearts of the fans, who will be forever thankful for spearheading the saviour of our club. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten at Holker Street. Our thoughts are with Brian's family and friends at this difficult time."

As a mark of respect, the club hosted a minute's silence before Tuesday night's EFL Cup match against Port Vale and all of the players wore black armbands.

A Barrow AFC spokesperson said: "Barrow AFC is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Life President, Brian Keen.

"Brian spearheaded the consortium of local businessmen which saved the club from extinction back in 1999 and without their thankless efforts, we may not have a club today.

"Brian was always a true gentleman who touched the lives of many here at Holker Street and he will certainly be missed by all of us here at Barrow AFC.

"All of the thoughts of everyone here at Barrow are with Brian’s family and friends at this difficult time.

"Rest In Peace, Brian."
