A group of amateur enthusiasts have been transforming Ulverston into a beacon for radio signals.

Two members from the Furness Amateur Radio Society (FARS) made their way up to the summit of Birkrigg Common on Sunday, August 11.

They were keen to join an on-the-air meet with fellow enthusiasts from The Wirral who had set up their own station on Esclusham Mountain in the Ruabon Moors, near Wrexham.

Using a homebuilt rig of just a tiny 600 milliwatts of transmit power, they succeeded in establishing a great contact and were able to exchange TV screen pictures with the Wirral group over a line of sight path of 123km.

It was said to be a 'great day out', with the group using the perfect weather conditions over the weekend and the 'fabulous' Cumbrian countryside to their advantage.
