THE inquest into the death of a 16-year-old boy who appears to have drowned on a school trip to the Lake District has been suspended pending the outcome of investigations by Cumbria Police.
Abuzr Mirza, from Burnley, died on July 25, 2024, while on a school trip to the Brockhole visitor centre on the shores of Windermere.
Opening the inquest at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court, assistant coroner for Cumbria Robert Cohen said that the reported circumstances are that Abuzr took his socks off to paddle in the water and ‘appears to have got into difficulty and drowned’.
Mr Cohen said it was appropriate that further investigation by the coroner’s service would be suspended as he had been made aware by Cumbria Police that they are conducting further inquiries into the death.
He said: “I send to all of Mr Mirza’s family, friends and loved ones the court’s profound sympathy and condolences for such a tragic death.”
Abuzr was a student at Dawatul Imaan Darul Uloom school in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
A statement from his school said: "This tragic event has had a profound effect on our whole school community.
“Everyone at the school is heartbroken.
“Abuzr was a lovely pupil who touched the lives of many with his warmth and kindness. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Abuzr’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“Our pupils and staff have come together in special assemblies and events to remember Abuzr and support one another.
“We are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigations by the police and the Health and Safety Executive to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
"The safety and well-being of our students is our utmost priority.”
Cumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive said they were investigating his death while the Lake District National Park Authority said it was “shocked and saddened” by the “tragic” death.
