NEW plans were lodged for a more ‘sensitive’ holiday resort in Furness after previously controversial plans were withdrawn in December.

The new scaled-back proposals will include the installation of 233 lodges, nearly half the previously proposed 450 lodges for the site, which the developers said would ‘significantly’ reduce the number of visitors to the site and potential associated impacts on the natural environment.

However, the proposals have faced opposition with Barrow Town Council labelling the type of development ‘totally unsuitable’ for the area and state it would have an ‘overbearing impact’ on the countryside.

Friends of the Lake District, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the National Trust, among other organisations, have objected to the proposals. A petition titled ‘Save Roanhead from Developers’ also has nearly 8,500 signatures.

MAJOR plans by BAE Systems to build a new ‘state of the art’ four-storey research and development facility in Barrow capable of housing hundreds of employees were revealed in April.

The defence giant submitted proposals to Westmorland and Furness Council for the construction of a building known as ‘Project Spartan’ on the site of the former industrial storage building known as B36.

Planning documents say the proposed Project Spartan building would be the ‘leading’ research and design building in the wider BAE Systems complex.

Planning documents say Project Spartan will consolidate around 750 BAE employees working in various buildings across Barrow into one building and provide crew accommodation for personnel who currently reside in temporary accommodation.

Adam Healey submitted a planning application to Westmorland and Furness Council to integrate Theatre Bar, on Cavendish Street, with Wrapport.

In a planning document, it states the integration of Theatre Bar and Wrapport would provide an enlarged nightclub, a restaurant, a kitchen and a bar.

Planning diagrams submitted also show there will be a rooftop terrace consisting of smoking and non-smoking areas on top of the venue.

PLANS for a new ‘leisure retreat’ on the Furness peninsula – next to land earmarked for a controversial resort – were revealed in June.

Queensland Country Park Ltd has submitted a planning application to build a ‘sustainable leisure retreat’ on land off Hawthwaite Lane on Roanhead consisting of 23 holiday lodges, 10 glamping pods, 24 caravan/motorhome pitches, a facilities building, an amenity block and a booking office.

A design and access statement said: “The application seeks to provide a low-impact, sustainable, leisure retreat for visitors to Roanhead, and for local residents.”

However the plans have faced objections from the National Trust, Cumbria Wildlife Trust as well as Barrow Town Council.
