Residents in Barrow have been showing their gratitude for their local police force during a 'difficult time' across the country.

Over the weekend the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) received tokens of thanks for their work from people living in the area.

This comes as officers across the country deal with large scale social unrest with riots taking place in numerous cities in response to the deaths of three children in Southport.

The residents said: "During Covid, people came out into the streets to thank the NHS for their valued service to the community.

"At this difficult time for all our police forces, facing many challenges from many quarters, it seems right to show our appreciation, support and grateful thanks for all you do to keep the public safe and to support them through traumatic times."

Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were all fatally stabbed in the incident on Merseyside on Monday, July 29.

Prime Minister Kier Starmer called an emergency Cobra meeting as far-right riots continued to escalate nationwide.

Clashes took place between anti-immigration demonstrators and counter-protesters, as the former targeted asylum hotels, mosques and innocent people on the street.

Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to parents from Rwanda, was charged with the stabbings in Southport.

With right-wing protesters using his heritage as an excuse to violently lash out, police forces have been caught in the middle of trying to protect their communities from overwhelming damage.

With that in mind, people living in Barrow wanted to do their bit - no matter how small - to show how those efforts are appreciated.

Delivering boxes of chocolate, they added: "This is a small token of our appreciation for all that you do.

"It is often a thankless task but you deserve our gratitude and respect as you put your lives on the line for us.

"We are praying for strength, courage, protection and well-being for each one of you."
