HORSES and riders came together to compete for the champion title across a number of equine events.
Ulverston and District Equine Club held its annual Championship Sash Show on Sunday at Lindal Cote Farm.
Avril McKinley, chair of the club, said: “It was a fabulous day. Big thank you to all the sponsors who contributed to the beautiful sashes and rosettes which help make the day very special.”
The show was ‘well attended’ as lots of spectators came to watch.
There were 160 competitors taking part in classes across four rings which were each overseen by a judge.
Ring one was reserved for the Working Hunter class ending with Darcey Howard being named champion.
Shirley Errington claimed the title of champion in both Riden Showing Class in Ring Two and In Hand Showing in Ring Three.
Ring Four was devoted to the event’s dedicated junior classes, which was won by Stanley Macaloon.
The titles of both Members Champion and Supreme Champion were awarded to Bradley Foxen.
Avril said: “We were very lucky to welcome our senior judge Mr Robert Parker Jones from Shropshire, who has attended competitions all over the world.”
As well as Mr Jones, the event was judged by Ms Dawn Hodson from Bolton, Mr Mick Corrigan from Lancashire and Mrs Louise Templeton from Carlisle.
Ulverston and District Equine Club was established in 1982 and was based at Newland Green for 30 ‘fantastic’ years before moving to Lindal Cote Farm in 2023. This provided an opportunity to expand their shows.
Avril said: “I’d like to say how grateful we are to JJ Sharp who own Lindal Cote Farm and gave the club use of the field. We wouldn’t be able to hold the show without them.”
Today, the club is open to riders of ages and abilities, from just three years old to pensionable age. Everyone is welcome to join.
Their main show events are held from May to September with their ‘hugely popular’ sash and championship competition in August.
Next month, on September 8, the club will have their last show of the season, which Avril said she is looking forward to.
“The committee is all volunteers who give up their free time,” she said. “A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to host these shows.”
