Wave Forward, a South Lakes mental health charity, has triumphantly launched The Helm, a youth hub dedicated to young people’s mental wellbeing.

Following the success of their schools-based Wellbeing Ambassador programme and recent community open day, The Helm opened its doors to a excited group of young people keen to build friendships, have fun and promote positive mental health.

The initial session was abundant with friendly competition, thought-provoking discussions about superpowers, and a pizza party.

The Helm, open to young people aged 13 to 25, places its members at the heart of its activities.

The hub encourages participants to shape future projects and community outreach efforts, in addition to offering a supportive environment for relaxation, respite from home or school pressure, and conversations over a cup of tea with friends or Wave Forward’s Youth Workers.

Concerning data from a 2023 NHS report indicates that one in five people aged eight to 25 have a probable mental disorder.

The hub is empowering young people to guide its operations and encouraging peer-to-peer support.

Operating from No-Hands Rest Coffee House in K-Village, Kendal, The Helm finds its home in a place that mirrors its ethos of compassion, collaboration, and inclusivity.

The next meeting of The Helm will occur on Saturday, August 17 from 4pm to 6pm.
