A tradition dating back to the reign of Elizabeth I is still going strong in Furness.
The village of Broughton and its residents came together for what was the 431st time on Thursday, August 1 to witness the Lord of the Manor proclaim the annual August Fair.

This has been going on since 1593, which saw Henry Stanley, Lord Strange - the fourth Earl of Derby - read the Proclamation for the first time.
The proceedings were introduced from the steps of the Obelisk by Councillor Matt Brereton, who welcomed the assembly and jointly read out the Proclamation alongside Parish Councillor James Brakewell, Vice-Chair of Duddon Parish Council.
The national anthem was sung and children were invited to join in proceedings by gathering pennies scattered to signify the distribution of alms.
Councillor Brereton then signed the Charter on behalf of Westmorland and Furness Council, which is the latest in a long line of Lords of the Manor.
