AN uncle who embarked on an ultra challenge in memory of his niece was 'gutted' for not completing the trail.

Tim Miles planned to do Brecon Beacons 105k on Saturday, July 27, for his niece Alyx Edwards, who died of sepsis when she was just 17 months old in November last year.

Alyx was born deaf and Tim took on the challenge to raise funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society which helped his brother, sister-in-law and Alyx in the past.

However, the 46-year-old felt sick at mile 32 and stopped the challenge after reaching mile 42. He explained it was 'very hard'.

"I managed to get to mile 42 where I had to pull out because I had no way of getting fuel to stay down," he said.

"I was gutted to have to stop after 42 miles but it is still a good distance with almost 9,000 feet of climbing."

The tops have a tattoo done by Tim's brother of him and Alyx going for a walk at Broadhaven with one of their cats following them.

Donations kept coming in and Tim managed to collect almost £1,900 for the charity - £900 above the initial target of £1,000.

"I am very happy about that and it will help children like my niece," said Tim.

Tim, who is also a retained firefighter at Bootle, thanked everyone who donated to the cause.

The GoFundMe page is still open for those who would like to make a donation. It can be accessed here.
