A MEMORIAL clock dedicated to heroes who served in World War One is planned to be up and running by September.

The clock above Roose Primary School in Barrow was installed on April 30 1921 with a plaque underneath bearing the names of those who fought in war.

Barrow Town councillor Paul Griffiths said the last time the clock was restored was in 2010 by the clock restorer David Burns.

Mr Burns accessed the clock and explained that part of the requirements is that it needs a scaffold on the outside.

“I put the call out to the community saying that we are on stage to progress and we will now need to start considering possible donations. Matt Sanderson got in touch with me and offered £500 towards the cost of the renovations which was fabulous,” said Cllr Griffiths.

"This has allowed me to book a scaffolding which will be installed next week and from there the plan is that with the combination of volunteers, myself, a friend and electricians, we are going to wire up the clock and put LED light inside.

Mr Griffiths explained they also might need to raise more funds to paint parts of the clock.

Westmorland and Furness Councillor Andy Coles has allocated £500 from his councillor allowance to this project, according to Mr Griffiths.

"We have costed this around £1,500 in total so we will likely be going back to the community and saying that we are a little bit short on the overall total but at the moment we can progress this and get things moving,” he said.

"This year is the 150th anniversary of the school so it would coincide quite nicely if we can get this all completed. We are hoping to complete it before the children go back in September.”
