A pub on Barrow Island will be hoping that its rich history can set it apart from the competition.

At the start of the month, The Mail launched the 'Best Pub 2024' award with readers subsequently nominating their favourites.

From this, the ten finalists have now been revealed with readers able to vote for their pub of choice by picking up copies of the newspaper until August 3.

Each of the ten establishments will feature in their own article with a different one being highlighted each day as they vie to earn your support in the campaign.

For the final time in the series, we travel to Barrow where the Devonshire has been pulling pints for locals for over a century.

The original brewery, now a block of apartments, was initially opened by George Heath - the Mayor of Barrow for three years - in 1871 before it closed in 1960.

This has not stopped the area from having a local to visit every night with the Devonshire pub forming a loyal band of customers at its home on Buxton Street.

It is also no stranger to picking up award glory, being named as the best pub in Barrow back in 2019.

It will be up to our readers to see if the Devonshire can go one step further and be crowned as the best haunt on the peninsula.

Explaining why the pub is so special, one frequent visitor said: "You enter as a stranger and leave as a friend - Sam and all the staff are so, so lovely."

"The Devonshire is amazing, super friendly staff, and the hospitality of the people is second to none," another regular commented.

A fan added: "It's the best pub in barrow and that's some statement from me - they make me feel like I'm at home, with great beer, great service and wonderful people."

You can make sure that the Devonshire gets your vote by picking up a copy of The Mail by Saturday, August 3.
