A show which was due to be performed at The Forum in Barrow has been moved after the discovery of asbestos last week.

Following a recent water leak, investigations in the backstage area confirmed the toxic substance on July 26 with Westmorland and Furness Council assuring the public that no traces have been found in air quality tests.

At this stage, the local authority asserts that there is no evidence to suggest that anyone has been exposed to risk.

Now, the performance of Ireland: The Show which was due to take place at the venue on Thursday, August 1 at 7.30pm will be performed at the Coronation Hall at the same time.

A spokesperson for The Forum said: "We realise the situation is far from ideal but we have worked hard to enable the show to go ahead to minimise the disappointment of customers looking forward to the performance.

"Members of our box office team are contacting ticket holders about the situation and to advise them on their options.

"Once again, we apologise for the change of venue and, while the issue with the Forum building is not of major concern, the safety of performers, staff and customers has to be our utmost priority.

"We would like to thank you for your continued support and understanding and if you would like to speak to a member of the box office team please call 01229 820000."

Level UP Gaming's 'Summer Fest' event, due to take place this weekend, has also lost access to the theatre room and will not be able to host competitions on the main stage.

Organisers announced on Facebook this afternoon that the event will take place upstairs. The post added: "We're aiming to offer as much gaming equipment as we can but may have to prioritise based on the space we have available and the little time left to organise everything.

"We've put a lot of effort into making this the best weekend of the summer and we're looking forward to seeing you all."

Friday and Saturday night performances from last weekend were also cancelled including that of Legally Blonde The Musical of Walney Musical Theatre Company.

The local authority said last week the theatre had no further bookings for August after this week and will be contacting producers on possible options for alternative venues.

The rest of the Forum, including the café, is unaffected and remains open and available to the public.
