A DRUG-driving teenager led police on a chase through Barrow streets at speeds up to 100 mph, a court heard.

Bailey Dutton, 18, of New Leys in Barrow, became involved in a high-speed police chase on March 4 this year, South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre said road traffic officers were heading towards Barrow when they saw the defendant driving a black Audi A4 SE TDI on Park Road.

Mr Dacre said Dutton accelerated away from officers in a pursuit deemed as ‘high risk’.

He said Dutton was driving at 100mph in a 30mph zone while on the wrong side of the road and driving at speeds of 70 mph through Ormsgill estate.

The court heard the defendant narrowly missing parked cars while driving with two passengers onboard.

His vehicle eventually came to a standstill on Chester Place due to a mechanical failure, the court was told.

Dutton was asked to conduct a roadside drug test for analysis by officers.

The court heard this came back positive for Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and Benzoylecgonine.

Mr Dacre said the lowest readings of which were 3.9 ug/L of THC and 788 ug/L of BZE.

Defence barrister Liz Phizacklea said her client made a ‘stupid decision’.

She added: “The defendant has seen two police cars. He had only had the car for four days prior to being stopped and he did not want that car being taken off him. He knew he was over the limit and has as a result decided to get away from the police.”

Dutton pleaded guilty to offences of dangerous driving, drug driving and driving without third party insurance on July 29.

However, magistrates imposed an interim disqualification and adjourned sentencing until August 19 for a pre-sentence report to be conducted.
