A couple recently arrived in Barrow as part of their challenge to walk the entire coastline of the UK.

Carol Deytrikh-White and her husband John have been undertaking the fundraising mission in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

This comes after Carol's previous partner Alex died as a result of the illness in 2009, as well as her brother Brian in 2022.

Speaking about Alex, Carol said: "He'd always been fit, never had a day off sick in the 28 years we'd been married.

"And he said to me 'I'm running three times a week but it's not getting any easier', and we didn't think any more of it.

"But then he had his RAF fitness test probably just a few weeks later and failed it because he couldn't do a press-up - it would still be a while before he got the diagnosis [for MND]."

MND is an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves, causing gradually increasing weakness over time.

Whilst there are treatments in place to reduce the impacts of the disease, there is currently still no cure.

"We started [walking the coast] in about 2018 when we were both working so we could only do a few weeks at a time," Carol explained.

"Since we've retired, we hope to do many weeks a year."

For Carol, their gargantuan walking journey is all about raising vital funds as well as increasing public awareness of MND.

"I worked as a nurse for 40 years and I only ever met one patient with MND - it was never a common condition.

"The only way there is ever going to be any treatment for it, and God willing a cure one day, is for research to take place.

"But because it doesn't affect a lot of people, it's difficult to get the funds for that research."
