BAE Systems plans to build a two-storey building in Barrow to house the on-site fire team has been given the go-ahead.

Westmorland and Furness Council has approved plans from BAE to build a two-storey Portakabin on Bridge Road that will contain office and amenity space for the on-site fire team.

According to planning documents the proposed new Portakabin will replace the old modular building which is described in planning documents as ‘inefficient’ and ‘dated’.

The design and access statement submitted with the application says a Portakabin solution has been chosen due to the cost and speed of installation.

Planning documents add that subject to relevant planning applications, the Portakabin can be moved around the site.

The design and access statement says: “The Portakabin building has been chosen as a result of the flexible solution it provides.”

According to plans the building will be prefabricated off-site so it will have a ‘minimum impact’ on the environment in terms of construction and use.

This planning application was approved on July 19.
