A MAN who caused serious injury by driving carelessly has avoided immediate jail time.

Konrad Patro admitted causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving after an incident on Park Road in Barrow last month.

South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard the 31-year-old drove a heavy goods vehicle without reasonable consideration for others using the road.

A man was taken to hospital with severe injuries following the incident.

Patro was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation.

Magistrates suspended the sentence for 24 months because the driver had no previous convictions and there was a 'good prospect of rehabilitation'.

The motorist, whose address was given as Szkolna in the Polish town of Lubycza Królewska, was handed a two-year driving ban.
