SOUTH Cumbria's hospitals are under 'extreme pressure', bosses say.

The trust that runs hospitals in the area said the pressure on service was currently significant.

The Morecambe Bay NHS Trust announced it was on the highest level of alert - OPEL Level 4 - with capacity under strain - on Monday.

That has now been de-escalated to OPEL 3.

But trust leaders say services are still facing pressures, with work underway to reduce the strain.

In a joint statement, three trust board members said: "Whilst our services remain under pressure, we have taken the decision to de-escalate back to OPEL Level 3.

"This decision was made because the pressure has reduced to a level which while still very significant, does not meet the OPEL 4 criteria.

"Whilst these de-escalations are positive news, it is important to note that our services do remain under extreme pressure.

"We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while our clinical teams restore our services to operational capacity."

The trust declared it was on its highest alert level on Monday 'due to increased pressures across our hospitals'.

Bosses said it would allow the trust 'to be able to take additional steps to maintain safe services for our patients and help us cope with the growing demands'.

"Declaring OPEL 4 enables us to bring all our partners in Lancashire and South Cumbria together to focus on one thing - the safe and timely care of all our patients," the trust said.

Patients were urged to turn up for appointments unless contacted.

People have also been told to be mindful of the pressures and only attend A&E for emergencies.

"Our teams continue to work exceptionally hard; and we would like to reassure our patients and the public that despite the challenges faced, essential services remain fully open for anyone who needs them so if you require urgent medical help, please continue to come forward," the trust said.

"If you are unwell, visit NHS 111 online for 24/7 advice about the most appropriate care for your needs."

The trust has also been dealing with a norovirus outbreak at Furness General Hospital, with visiting currently suspended on Ward 6.
