A family in Windermere have raised a 'phenomenal' amount of money in memory of a beloved local businessman.
William Derek Moore, known affectionately as Derek, died in June 2020 following a five year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
A well known restauranteur for 28 years, Derek is fondly remembered by his wife Jeannie, son Adrian, and daughter Ashleigh.
In an attempt to increase awareness about the illness, his death has inspired his family to take on multiple fundraising events.
Through this, they have managed to raise £11,503.75, which will be going to Wales and North England Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Ashleigh said: "We launched a JustGiving page in April this year, setting an initial target of £4,000 which was reached sooner than we'd thought.
"Adrian took on the formidable challenge of completing the Lakes Half Ironman which he finished with tremendous effort and the donations kept pouring in.
"And then we hosted an evening of celebration on June 16 at The Easy Breeze in Bowness, where around 80 friends and family members gathered to commemorate and honour dad’s memory."
The family wanted to thank a number of local businesses for their support.
These included The Easy Breeze, The Old England, Mountain Goat, Windermere Lake Cruises, Lindeth Howe, Beatrix Potter, Brackens of Bowness florist, and Suzy B.
Other businesses that supported the fundraising were 'Boutique - Travel to Go', Quayside, the Albert Hotel, Betty Fluffs, Homeground, Urban Food House, Hooked Restaurant, Arts Bar, Stewart Sports, and Mountain Warehouse.
On July 12, the family presented the cheque to Wendy Jones, Regional Coordinator of their chosen charity, at The Old England Hotel.
Wendy commented: "A heartfelt thanks to you for raising such an extraordinary amount of money for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
"Without the hard work from people like you, our charity could not exist."
Ashleigh believed that her family's charity work, along with the community's dedication, has created a 'lasting tribute' to Derek, ensuring his legacy continues to make a positive impact.
She added: "Derek was a humble gentleman who would be very overwhelmed and proud of this phenomenal amount raised."
