A couple in Ulverston are hoping to add yet another title to their repertoire as they compete with others pubs in the region.

At the start of the month, The Mail launched the 'Best Pub 2024' award with readers subsequently nominating their favourites.

From this, the ten finalists have now been revealed with readers able to vote for their favourite by picking up copies of the newspaper until Saturday, August 3.

Each of the ten establishments will feature in their own article with a different one being highlighted each day as they vie to earn your support in the campaign.

Husband and wife duo Graham and Andrea Wilson originally moved into the pub back in 2011 before buying it themselves three years later.

After discovering that the pub has been nominated for the award, Graham said: "It's great - it's always nice to be recognised and appreciated.

"We moved into the pub in November 2011 - the gas and electric had been cut off and it was about to be closed for good.

"We started as tenants for Robinson's Brewery and then we bought it off them in 2014, they were very helpful during our tenancy and actually throughout the process of buying the pub."

The Old Friends is no stranger to tasting glory, being named as Furness CAMRA pub of the year in 2020 and 2022.

Graham added: "We have put in a new bar, made some other alterations inside, done a lot of work in the garden and kept the décor refreshed since then, as well as opening our own on site brewery in 2019.

"We are incredibly proud of what we, all the staff, and customers involved have achieved.

"And the future is looking good as we are still gaining new customers from 18 to 80 year olds - it gives the pub lots of character to have such a mix of people using it."

Will that variety of pubgoers see the Old Friends claim victory? Cast your vote by August 3 to make sure your voice is heard.
