A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital after crashing and hurting her hip near a Lake District tarn.

Coniston Mountain Rescue was called on Tuesday (July 16) at 12.06pm after a couple were cycling along a track heading past Blelham Tarn when the woman missed the bridge over a beck, crashed and hurt her hip.

North West Ambulance Service called both CMRT and Helimed 08 from Blackpool out.

One of CMRT's local team members arrived at the same time as the paramedics who assessed and treated her, administering strong pain relief.

A spokesperson for CMRT said: "Since there were already enough people available to carry the helicopter’s stretcher, the rest of the team was stood down en route, and returned to base.

"Helimed 08 flew the casualty to Royal Lancaster Hospital for further treatment."

Eight volunteer team members attended this incident, which lasted for one hour and 17 minutes.
