The captain of a golf club in Barrow is supporting a local charity for a year after they cared for his father-in-law.

Jason Jefferson took on the role at Furness Golf Club back in March and will be using his time in the position to raise money for St Mary's Hospice, based in Ulverston.

This was kick started in June when he helped organise a Captain's Away Day which involved 64 golfers getting stuck into a tournament.

Jason said: "I am delighted to take St Mary's Hospice as my Charity of the Year.

"All my family support them by taking part in their lottery and we commenced this following the support and care St Mary's staff gave to my father in law, Geoff Price.

"Their support was incredible and we couldn't thank them enough."

On Saturday, July 13, a Captain's Day with 140 golfers took place, which saw Dave Patton named as the champion before a social evening invited people to enjoy their weekend at the club.

A further tournament will take place on August 3 and will act as yet another fundraiser for the hospice before singer Pete Murphy takes to the stage on August 10 for a night of entertainment and donations.

"I'm planning on supporting St Mary's as Captain of Furness Golf Club throughout my term," Jason added.

"I am organising social events for members and non-members and everyone is welcome - it's an excellent club and the new caterers, AC Bistro, have joined the club offering a wide selection of meals throughout the week.

"We look forward to seeing as many people attend our events as possible to raise funds for such a worthy cause."

The hospice shared their gratitude towards Jason, describing it as an 'excellent start' to his fundraising that promises to deliver a vital and constant source of donations for the next 12 months.
