The new landlady of a historic South Cumbrian pub has the full backing of the local community.

The General Burgoyne in Great Urswick revealed on its social media that it had been taken over by new management.

Denise Chamberlain, chair of Urswick, Bardsea and Stainton Parish Council, said: “The new landlady, Mrs Jo Ritchie - is a well-known village resident, and long-time supporter of community projects.

“She has the full backing of the local community who are all very excited to have their village pub open again and Mrs Ritchie has firm plans to bring it back as a welcoming community hub.

“I know she is working very hard to get the pub ready. But when the doors are finally open she can certainly expect a queue.

“Historically the Burgoyne was well known for its specialty dish of homemade Pie & Peas - and the new landlady will definitely be following on that tradition.”

The General Burgoyne closed four months ago when it ceased operations on March 20, 2024.
