School kids in Barrow have raised an 'amazing' amount for a local charity with the help from a Cumbrian business.

St Mary's Hospice said Year Four pupils at Victoria Academy had donated £1,200 to support their work.

This came about through the 'Bright Stars' project, which sees the children receive £50 to organise their own social enterprise.

Working in tandem with Oxley Developments, the kids at Victoria Academy set up two cake sales and an afternoon tea event.

An initial target of £300 was originally set, a figure that would be tripled through their fundraising endeavours.

With Oxley committing to adding £300 of their money to boost the end total, this saw £1,200 make its way to the hospice.

A spokesperson from Oxley commented: "St Mary’s Hospice is such an important charity in our community, we were delighted the children chose to support them through Bright Stars."
