'SKILLFUL' helicopter flying was required as two separate youth groups hiking in the Lake District required mountain rescue help simultaneously.

A member of one youth group had suffered a suspected broken ankle and a member of another was reported to be hypothermic near the summit of Esk Pike.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team requested the help of the Duddon and Furness team, the Kendal team and HM Coastguard Rescue 199 from Prestwick.

"The first few team members got up to the top of Esk Pike as the helicopter had managed to skilfully fly through the thick cloud," a Langdale team spokesperson said.

"The casualty was treated, loaded into the helicopter and flown down into the valley to an awaiting ambulance. The helicopter then flew back up for the second casualty, who had been treated and prepared by the team. They were then flown directly to hospital.

"The rest of the teams on the hill helped the uninjured members of the groups down back into the valley."

The group thanked the other teams - especially Rescue 199 'whose great flying skills enabled us to resolve both incidents swiftly.'
