A women's rounders team in South Cumbria has got a new kit thanks to the support of a local community shop.

The all-female Hit Squad based in Walney got new gear this month including quality red hoodies and shirts.

One Stop Shop based on Mill Lane picked the team to get its sponsorship for 2024.

In the past it has sponsored teams such as Walney Island FC (youth and senior) and Walney Central Rugby Team (mini and senior, ladies).

It has also sponsored many school sports days and been very active in fundraising in the community.

Neal Henderson, who runs the shop, said: "I was approached by the daughter of one of our long-standing customers Ian Gay who had just started up a women's rounders team.

"I've been in retail for 30 years and at the One Stop Shop for five years.

"Every year I pick a team to sponsor and most of the time it has been boy's or men's team so I was thrilled at the chance to pick a women's team to sponsor - especially with it being a starters' team too."

The team is made up of a mix of age ranges, some as young as 16, who love to play rounders.

Lois Gay, 36, is the team member who approached the One Stop shop for the sponsorship.

She said: "All the girls are so grateful for Neal's sponsorship and we'd really like to thank him for his support. The new kit is really fabulous and it just makes us feel better to play in.

"We just have to put in some winning performances in the new kit now."
