An unsung hero at Muncaster Castle was left stunned after winning an award at the "Oscars" of the tourism industry.

Head of Experiences at the castle, Hannah Clapp, received the accolade at the Cumbria Tourism Awards.

She said: "I’m in total shock at the moment.

"It was a lovely surprise to be nominated and shortlisted but to then win the award just means the world to me."

The Sheila Hensman Unsung Hero Award, given to an exceptional individual in the tourism sector, was presented to Ms Clapp at a grand ceremony in Kendal.

She said: "It’s a nice feeling to have all your hard work and dedication rewarded.

"I am just one member of the incredible team at Muncaster who all share my passion for the place and together we make it the fantastic venue that it is."

Ms Clapp began as an occasional volunteer at the West Cumbrian attraction, formerly serving as a teaching assistant in a nearby primary school.

She soon took on a full-time educational officer position, working to make the castle a "must visit" destination for educational trips.

She has also helped organize large events such as the 'Race The Tide' running event and the Krankenhaus music festival.

Ewan Frost-Pennington from Muncaster the said: "Hannah’s artistic flair comes into play big time in creatively decorating Muncaster for festivals and events.

"Her innovative ideas and sheer hard graft know no bounds.

"Hannah is the bedrock of Muncaster’s recent success and a springboard to a viable future.

"She’s very humble and never seeks the limelight.

"She is a true unsung hero.”

Gill Haigh, managing director of Cumbria Tourism, said: "Hannah’s dedication behind the scenes to help Muncaster Castle provide a wonderful visitor experience makes her a perfect recipient of the Sheila Hensman Unsung Hero Award.

"She is a brilliant example of the many unsung heroes who help make our tourism industry world class."
