BARROVIANS with memories of a legendary club where Tom Jones gave a famous performance are wanted for a social history project associated with the Festival of Transport.

The 99s club, also known as 'The Nines', is now The Lounge and Cloud 9 on Dalkeith Street.

It had a famous period as a cabaret club during the 1960s including an appearance by the Welsh icon.

Producer Stefan Escreet is compiling recordings of memories that will be used in the Barrow Audio Adventure. The audience will listen to the various memories and facts as they walk between the Town Hall and Ramsden Square.

"We’ve been recording conversations with people about all the places we pass on the route and that includes 'The Nines,'" Stefan said.

"Back in the day some very big names appeared at the club and we know people had special times there.

"If people would like to share their stories we’d be delighted to hear from them.”

Author Alan Wilkinson wrote a history of the venue in his 320-page book 'The Story of the 99 Club' which he published last year.

He said: "The history of the 99 Club has proved beyond doubt that it served as one of the top three cabaret clubs to have ever operated in the UK.

“I know of the book having brought tears of joy to quite a few people already, that means so much to me, I couldn’t ask for more.

"There is no other social venue in the history of Furness as successful as the 99, the club is so very special to so many people even today, 60 years on.

“The mass of joy and happiness will live on forever.”
