Ulverston Mayor and husband of new Barrow and Furness MP Michelle Scrogham has emphasised how proud he is of his wife's sweeping result.

Last night, the Labour candidate swept to victory in the constituency ahead of the sitting MP, Conservative Simon Fell.

In her victory speech, Mrs Scrogham said she would 'work tirelessly' for the 'whole of the constituency' and 'address the disfunctioning Westminster'.

Graham, who became Ulverston Major on May 20, was by her side all night.

"We were relaxed but quite tense," said Graham. "When the exit polls came in at 10pm we had goosebumps.

"We were aware that Michelle was most likely going to be elected, however we couldn't take anything for granted until the results were in and down on paper."

The pair had been out since 8am that morning campaigning until around 8.30pm that evening.

As soon as the first national results rolled in, Michelle's team had kept them informed of number and the pair headed down to the Town Hall around an hour before for the big coun

Graham said: "When the results came in we were absolutely elated . I know how much hard work Michelle has put into this campaign and she has been out for the best part of 18 months going to door-to-door.

"And not just in Barrow either - in Dalton, Lindal, Millom, Ulverston. From the start, she has always said that she wants to be an MP not just for Barrow but for Furness also.

"She always said she wanted to be a member of a majority government too and rule with a proper mandate in full service of the people.

"Before the results came in, I think I was more nervous than Michelle as I know all the hard work she has put in. When heard the results were verified we were elated, it had all been worthwhile."

Graham added: "It's been a really good, clean campaign and there's been no gutter-style politics - they haven't set out to deride each other.

"Simon actually contacted Michelle upon the announcement of the general election. He joked and said 'obviously I won't wish you luck' but offered words of advice in terms of things like security.

"Michelle handles it really well though. She is the first woman and first local so I know she's going to be a fantastic MP for both Barrow and Furness."

The couple left the count around 3am, which Graham reported to be a lot earlier than anticipated as the Barrow team were so efficient at working through the results.

They then went on to enjoy some impromptu celebrations with colleagues at the Barrow and Furness Constituency Labour Party office who were having a watch party.
