WELL-WISHERS have congratulated the new MP for Barrow and Furness after last night's election victory.

Labour's Michelle Scrogham swept to victory in the constituency ahead of the sitting MP, Conservative Simon Fell.

She achieved 44 per cent of the vote after more than 42,000 ballots were cast in the rejigged constituency, giving her a majority of more than 5,000.

In a victory speech, Mrs Scrogham said she would 'work tirelessly' for the 'whole of the constituency' and 'address the dysfunctioning Westminster'.

Mrs Scrogham used social media to say she was 'humbled by the support' saying that the 'real work starts now'.

She said: "Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and to those who didn't, I hope to earn your trust going forward and promise to represent the whole of our constituency."

Hundreds of people commented on the post where they shared their messages of support towards the newly elected MP.

One supporter said: "You'll be a great voice for Barrow and Furness Michelle. So pleased for you and the wider Labour party."

One said: "Congratulations Michelle. I can’t think of anyone who has worked harder than you for this. I took 2 seconds in that ballot yesterday"

Another posted: "Congrats on a brilliant election result! I'm looking forward to seeing your work in the local area over the next 4 years, and hopefully working alongside you on a number of important issues."

Another supporter added: "Congratulations Michelle Scrogham on your Election to parliament, the hard work was well worth it and you can be proud of the campaign that you built to produce this brilliant result."
