WESTMORLAND and Furness Council has confirmed it has 'no plans' to book controversial comedian Roy Chubby Brown at Barrow's Forum theatre.

Members of the comic's team claimed theatre bosses did not wish to book him for the foreseeable future..

Previous visits from the comedian to Barrow have proved controversial but have drawn crowds to the council-run venue.

Taking to social media, Brown's tour manager said: "The Forum Theatre Barrow-in-Furness have now informed me they do not wish to book another Chubby show for the foreseeable future.

"Yet again this is all the info I have, I have asked for a reason why, but no reason or explanation has been given, just literally they don’t wish to book Chubby at this time.

"If anyone gets a reason why either of the venues don’t want to book a sell-out show and very successful evening for themselves please let me know - it's simply comedy."

A council spokesman confirmed the comic would not be performing at The Forum.

“Westmorland and Furness Council aims to create an exciting, varied and balanced programme of events at our venues which will be popular and make a significant contribution to residents' access to culture and entertainment," they said.

"The council has no plans to book Roy Chubby Brown for The Forum at this time.”

Last year Chubby Brown and his team were left 'baffled and confused' after claiming they were told there were 'no plans' to book him to perform at The Forum.

A council spokesman did not specify when asked if the comedian had been informed he would not be booked, saying at the time it would make a decision once a new bookings policy based on its 'set of values' was in place.

He last performed in Barrow in 2022.

Before that the contentious character performed to a sold-out crowd in Barrow in 2019 despite a storm of negativity in the weeks leading up to his show.

The comedian's sarcastic blue humour, which often pokes fun at disabled and ethnic audience members, has previously caused a number of his shows to be cancelled across the UK.

In 2019, former Barrow MP John Woodcock, now Lord Walney, urged The Forum to consider cancelling his shows after being contacted by a disabled constituent who was ‘mercilessly pilloried’ by the entertainer when he visited Barrow in 2016.

However, Barrow audience members turned up in their hundreds to see the Yorkshire comedian deliver some of his most outrageous jokes.
