A team of local radio enthusiasts left their usual stations behind to make use of a nearby peak.

Eight members of the Furness Amateur Radio Society (FARS) climbed Kirkby Moor on Wednesday, June 25 to take advantage of the 'splendid' sunshine.

The aim of the exercise was to activate a SOTA (Summits on the Air).

Hills and mountains throughout the world have been identified and radio amateurs seek to use them to contact one another with Kirkby Moor being the nearest spot for the FARS.

One of the members involved commented: "Even though I 'do' Kirkby Moor regularly, I usually don't approach it from the direction we adopted on Wednesday and The Old Slate Road was a bit more derelict than the last time I had travelled it.

"We had very pleasant operating conditions during the evening and we are all looking forward to some more portable work throughout the summer."
