CANADIAN politicians have blasted a partnership with Barrow AFC, describing it as a 'waste of money'.

The Bluebirds are due to carry the logo of the government of Newfoundland and Labrador as part of a sponsorship agreement with the province.

The deal, which is reportedly worth $171,000 (nearly £99,000), has been criticised by opposition politicians in the province.

Tony Wakeham, the leader of the province's Progressive Conservative Party, blasted the deal, saying the province had a homelessness problem and older people who could not afford medication.

"And then we find out that this government turned around and gave $171,000 to sponsor a Tier 4 English soccer team, whom nobody had ever heard of," he said, in comments reported by the Canadian press.

"It's ridiculous, outlandish and it shows a total disrespect for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador who are struggling to make ends meet."

Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne rejected the criticism, saying the idea to partner with the team came from a 'think-tank' session within the department and meant the province's name would now be viewed by millions of people from around the world.

"It's out-of-the box thinking," he told CBC News.

The minister said being featured on the team's shirts would mean the province's name would be showcased in video games including the popular EA FC and allow it to attract 'young talent' and 'young families'.

Newfoundland and Labrador's capital St John's lies more than 2,000 miles away from Barrow, at the end of a nearly 6-hour flight from London Gatwick.

Following the announcement of the deal, Barrow AFC players and staff visited St John's to help in youth training camps in what has been described as the start of a continuing sports exchange between the club and the province.

Announcing the deal last month, co-owner of Barrow AFC Tony Shearer said: "I was fortunate enough to visit this beautiful province recently and meet our new partners.

"There is a natural empathy between our two hard-working blue-collar communities who also enjoy life to the fullest.

"We felt so welcome wherever we went, everyone was so friendly and hospitable. What a great place to live.

"This partnership provides an exciting international platform for both parties, and I know we’ll enjoy working together."
