A registered veterinary nurse has completed the Three Peaks challenge for an animal charity.

Beth Backhouse, from Windermere, took on the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon).

To complete the challenge, a total of 10,052 ft elevation and 23 miles must be conquered within a 24-hour window.

Beth raced alongside a couple of friends and colleagues from work to raise money for the Blue Cross animal charity.

She said the team all work as registered veterinary nurses so it seemed fitting to raise money for animals and their owners.

The time it takes challengers to travel between each mountain must be included in the total time.

After climbing Ben Nevis, Beth’s team was delayed on their journey to Scafell Pike due to a road closure which put them two hours behind schedule.

Beth said the road closure caused her to doubt they’d be able to complete the challenge in time.

But Beth and her team managed to make the time back by running some of the way.

In the end, they successfully completed the three peak challenge in 23 hours and 41 minutes.

Beth said: “We ended up running most of Scafell. I’m happy it’s done, my legs were very stiff for a couple of days."

Beth set off on her epic adventure at 8am on Saturday June 23 and finished just before 8am on Sunday morning.

She said it was 'a lot harder mentally than she expected' and that having to set off climbing up Snowdon at 4am in the cold and wet was 'tough'.

Despite choosing to hold their challenge in June with hopes high for good weather, the team carried on through the rain.

“I’d say the most difficult was probably Snowdon because we had already done two other climbs and we hadn’t slept," she said.

Beth has successfully raised £1,500 for the charity, triple her initial target of £500.

“It’s just incredible," she said. "Whenever I do any fundraising for charity I’m always so overwhelmed with how generous people are especially because I’ve had donations from people I’ve never met."
