A LAKE District National Park Authority boss has asked visitors not to light fires as they can cause damage 'that can last for years.'

Tony Watson, who manages visitors services at the park authority, said: "The scars can last for many months without restoration."

In reference to the recent hot weather, he said: "Wildfires can take hold very quickly at this time. Please don't put firefighters at risk."

Mr Watson recommended visitors should instead use hearths and fire pits that have already been set up at campsites, calling it 'a much better choice.'

"Have a great time - but please do so without a fire," he added.

In June last year, fire crews across the region had to respond to a wildfire that broke out on Gale Naze Crag near Waterhead.

At the time, Cumbria Fire and Rescue warned holidaymakers to be vigilant with barbecue and camp fires.

They said: "A lakeside fire might seem like a good idea, but it can quickly go wrong. With the warm, dry weather, wildfires are more likely to happen. Avoid open flames in rural areas. If you spot a wildfire, call 999 immediately.”
