A BAND that has influenced acts such as Oasis since their formation in 1987 will be playing in Barrow later this year.

The Real People, from Liverpool, helped shape the move in the indie rock scene from new wave back towards guitars with The La's and The Stone Roses at the end of the 1980s.

The band released singles 'Open Up your Mind,' 'Window Pane' and 'The Truth' and their self titled album after signing to Columbia Records in 1989.

Band leaders Tony Griffiths (bass, vocals) and Chris Griffiths (guitars, vocals) worked extensively with Oasis during the early part of the band's career, with the former providing backing vocals and production assistance to their first single Supersonic, and the latter receiving a songwriting credit on the song 'Rockin' Chair.'

The listing states: "There can be no doubt that the Oasis sound borrowed heavily from The Real People."

Pop star Cher also covered a song written by Tony called 'One by One' in 1996.

The band will be performing with guitarist Martin Lappin and Tony McGuigan on drums.

They will perform at The Meeting Place on October 26, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.50.
