UNITED Utilities has apologised after sending residents letters to tell them their water supply was going to be switched off on the wrong day.

One local woman believed that the water was going to be turned off on Wednesday (June 26) because her dad in Rampside Road received a letter from United Utilities.

The letter read: "Sorry, we may need to turn your water off.

"Your water may go off during the times detailed below while we carry out work to improve the water supply in your area.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will have your water supply on as quickly as possible if we need to switch it off."

It then instructed that the water was going to be turned off between 10am and 1pm.

This was not officially documented on the United Utilities website which led to confusion on a local Facebook group with some residents saying they had not been given any notice.

United Utilities has now confirmed this was a scheduling error and letters were sent out to residents in error.

Maintenance work will actually be taking place in North Row and Rampside Road next month.

(Image: Submitted) A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "We have got some planned maintenance work due to take place in the area and while this is carried out it will be necessary to isolate supplies to a small number of properties.

"We expect the work should be completed within the day and while it takes place, we will bring in our water on wheels tankers to help keep the taps running.

"It seems that in this case we were a bit too quick off the mark to let customers know as the work isn’t due to take place until next month. We apologise for any confusion caused."
