RESIDENTS have been left frustrated by delays to bin collections lasting weeks.

Householders say they have been left waiting for weeks for recycling bins in the Barrow area to be collected after delays.

Westmorland and Furness Council said a temporary suspension of recycling collections was being pushed back further to July 5.

It is said to follow backlogs in collecting general waste from homes.

The council said recycling collections were suspended on June 21 to allow crews to catch up on general waste collections, telling residents they could leave extra recycling waste for collection.

Explaining the delays, a Westmorland and Furness Council spokesperson said: "We experienced some operational issues which impacted collections and we thank residents for their patience and understanding.

"Missed collections will be collected on their next due date."

But residents have told The Mail they have been left infuriated by missed collections, with waste piling up and have questioned the reliability of the council's bin services.

In areas across Barrow several recycling bins have been left out to by emptied by residents expecting their usual collections last week.

Writing on social media, Sam Atkinson said his recycling was full up and causing further problems.

"Had recycling out since 14th. Red bin now full. Now house is getting full of it," he said.

"Should be able to get a refund on council tax if you have to take it to recycling yourself."

And Katharine Smith: "It’s absolutely ludicrous I am honestly contemplating cancelling my £150 a month council tax direct debit."

Kath Simm described it as 'disgusting', saying it represented 'bad management of one of our essential services' and claiming the services had gone downhill since the council shake-up in 2023.

Alan Barrow said: "Since this council came into being the bin collections for Barrow/Dalton areas have completely become appalling."

In a further disruption, the council cancelled Tuesday's garden waste collections, saying they would resume the following day.

In a note on its website, the council told residents: "Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The council has not warned of any delays to scheduled general waste collections.
